The only thing photographers “need to do” is use a bag that they find comfortable. I use a PD Everyday Backpack to transport gear to locations, but prefer the Sling, or the GoRuck with an insert, as a shooting bag. The stretchy mesh on the back of the straps has more of a ripstop design, compared to the ballistic-style straps of the V1. We’ve heard some reports that the back of the straps on the original Everyday Backpack get chewed up and start pilling—this small design change should help with that. It was my photography bag for a while but I find it less comfortable for that job than Shimoda bags (still waiting on my yellow 50 L they just released!). My lightest pack — which packs down to the size of a plum and clips to my belt (in case I stop at a market or pick up a souvenir) — is a Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Travel Day Pack. It’s not going to be comfortable fully loaded with gear, but it does fine with a jacket, spare lens, batteries and a snack. @Michael Jardine - It can very much be used as a regular backpack though.
